Tinkerbell dress and cupcakes

For Ashleys 4th birthday I made her this Tinkerbell dress. I used the pattern from Prudent Baby. And although I had some fear to start the project, it is really not that hard! Luckily my niece loved the end result. And so did her friend Tim who immediately picked a flower from the garden and proposed to her. Aaah the 4 year olds.

Voor Ashleys vierde verjaardag maakte ik deze Tinkerbel jurk. Ik gebruikte het patroon van Prudent Baby. En ookal had ik wat drempelvrees om aan het projectc te beginnen, het is helemaal niet zo moeilijk! Gelukkig vond mijn nichtje hem prachtig. En haar vriendje Tim ook. Die plukte gelijk een bloem en vroeg haar ten huwelijk.

I also gave her the felt cake and crochet cupcakes in a small wooden box I decorated with my Copic markers.

Ik gaf haar ook de vilten taart en gehaakte cakejes in een klein doosje dat ik met mijn Copic markers versierde.

Easter sleep over

For the first time we had a sleep over in our house. Our niece Ashley, who turns 4 on Saturday, stayed with us for a night. And we had fun!

Voor de eerste keer hadden we een logeetje. Ons nichtje Ashley die zaterdag 4 jaar wordt bleef de nacht van eerste op tweede Paasdag slapen. En wat hebben we een plezier gehad!

Dress a girl

Remember the dress a girl around the world project? When I joined their facebook, I was contacted by Rachel and she asked me if I lived far from Amsterdam. One of the representatives for Dress a girl around the world would come back from Uganda in April and maybe I would be interested to meet up? Of course I was! I love meeting people like that. So, yesterday I met Wendy and her father Ken for dinner in one of my favorite restaurants in Amsterdam. We had a lovely evening! I got to hear first hand stories about dressing the girls, about life in Uganda, about the project and about Hope 4 Kids and Hope 4 Women. But above all Wendy and Ken are very inspiring people and we laughed and touched each others hearts. I forgot to take a picture of us...  But the picture above is the necklaces Wendy brought me. They are made by hand by the women in Uganda. They are made from paper beads from recylcled calenders and magazines. I think they are just lovely and special. I will be sewing more dresses in the future for sure. Just a little something for me and a huge deal for the girls. Join them on facebook to see the girls in the dresses and look into their eyes. Herinner je het dress a girl around the world project nog? Toen ik ze op facebook toevoegde werd ik gecontacteerd door Rachel die me vroeg of ik soms in Amsterdam woonde. Een van haar vrijwilligers vloog via Amsterdam terug van Uganda naar de US in April en misschien vond ik het leuk haar te ontmoeten? En natuurlijk vond ik dat leuk! Ik vind het heerlijk om zo mensen te ontmoeten. Gisteren was het zo ver. Ik heb Wendy en haar vader Ken meegenomen naar een van mijn favoriete restaurants in Amsterdam. We hebben een heerlijke avond gehad! Ik kreeg uit eerste hand de verse verhalen uit Uganda. Wendy en Ken zijn heel inspirerende mensen en we hebben gelachen en elkaars hart geraakt. Ik ben alleen vergeten foto's van ons te nemen... Maar de foto hierboven is van de kettingen die Wendy voor me meegenomen had. Ze zijn met de hand gemaakt door de vrouwen in Uganda. Ze worden van papieren kralen gemaakt. Die kralen maken ze van oude kalenders en tijdschriften. Ik vind ze heel bijzonder. Ik zal in de toekomst zeker nog meer jurkjes maken. Een kleine moeite voor mij en een groot geschenk voor de meiden. Voeg ze toe aan je facebook om de foto's van de meiden die een jurk krijgen te kunnen zien. En kijk dan eens in hun ogen. Het maakt echt verschil.

Scavenger Hunt swap April

A scavenger hunt is a game where you get words from which you choose and then you make and find your partner goodies with those words.

For the April Scavenger Hunt on Dutch Swappers I made the following for Miranda: a cotton messenger bag, easter egg cozies , Dutch Koopmans recipe booklet and a yellow spring ribbon of 1,5meter. The egg cozies are all the same. One blue side and one red polka dot side. But the sizes and shapes are not all equal. I had quite a hard time sewing the exact same shape in the curves...

Een vossenjacht en een spel waar je woorden krijgt waaruit je kunt kiezen en daar moet je dan dingen bij maken of vinden voor je partner. 

Voor de vossenjacht van April op Dutch Swappers maakte ik voor Miranda: een katoenen messenger bag, Paasei warmers, Hollands Koopmans receptenboekje en een lente- achtig geel lint van 1,5 meter. De eierwarmers zijn allemaal hetzelfde met 1 blauwe en 1 rode met polkadot kant. Maar de maten en vormen zijn niet allemaal exact gelijk. Ik vond het nog knap moeilijk om die scherpe bochten te naaien en dezelfde vormen te krijgen...

E-reader cover

Back in October I got an e-reader for my birthday. Until last Sunday I did not really use it. I guess the change from paper to tablet was harder than I thought. But then, when I did start to use it, I wanted to make a cover to keep it scratch free at all times.


In Oktober kreeg ik een e-reader kado. Tot afgelopen vrijdag had ik hem nog niet echt gebruikt. De overgang van papier naar tablet was blijkbaar moeilijker dan ik dacht. Maar toen ik hem eenmaal gebruikt had, wilde ik er een hoes voor maken zodat er geen krassen op komen.

The Japanese Kawai hippo -my all time favorite animal- fabric is from here. The soft corduroy lining and cotton back are from here. The button is one of my grandmothers treasures. The pattern...by me! No tutorial was used. Hah.

De Japanse nijlpaarden - mijn favoriete dier- stof komt hier vandaan. De zachte babyrib binnenstof en de katoenen stof van de achterkant haalde ik hier. De knoop komt uit mijn oma's schatkist. En het patroon...van mezelf! Geen tutorial gebruikt. Ha.

What I read this Sunday

A hotel they are building in Zaandam. A pretty place close to Amsterdam. Love it or hate it? I haven't made up my mind yet but it did make my jaw drop.

Een hotel dat ze aan het bouwen zijn in Zaandam. Vind je het mooi of vreselijk lelijk? Ik ben er nog niet uit, maar mijn mond viel er wel van open.

Swap-workshop

So after getting me into swap-bot, Lisette now also got me into checking out swap-workshop. My goodness, it is amazing! I am having so much fun making things for people. Take this crochet hook pouch. I loved making it for Mette.  Not for money, but for credits. And these credits you can spend on other peoples products on swap-workshop. Nadat Lisette me enthousiast maakte voor swap-bot een jaar geleden, deed ze dat nu met swap-workshop. Het is geweldig! Ik heb zo veel plezier in het maken van dingen voor de mensen daar. Neem nou bovenstaand hoesje voor haaknaalden. Ik vond het heerlijk om dat voor Mette te maken. Niet voor geld, maar voor credits. En die credits kun je uitgeven bij anderen aan dingetjes die jij graag wil hebben. Direct nadat ik deze haaknaalden-hoes had geupload kwamen er ng 2 bestellingen voor binnen. Neem er eens een kijkje. En als je besluit je (gratis) in te schrijven, geef mij (kimminita) dan als referentie op.

It is like swap-bot, but on swap-workshop you always know what you get and you can 'buy' whatever you like from someone else. One of the reasons I stopped swapping bags on swap-bot is because I would get one back. And trust me...I have plenty bags now.  So I list my bags on swap-workshop and 'buy' for instance fabrics in return. But, my first purchase there is this felt cake from Amanda for my nieces birthday.

Het is net zoiets als swap-bot, maar op swap-workshop weet je wat je krijgt en je kunt 'kopen' wat je wil en van wie je wil. Een van de redenen dat ik gestopt ben met tassenswaps op swap-bot is omdat ik er altijd als ik er 1 verstuur ook 1 terug krijg. En ik heb er echt voldoende inmiddels, geloof me. Dus nu maak ik tassen en die zet ik op swap-workshop en dan 'koop' ik er bijvoorbeeld stof voor terug. Maar mijn allereerste aan'koop' daar is dit vilten taartje van Amanda voor mijn nichtjes verjaardag binnenkort.

Dresses for girls around the world

Over the past week you have been sending me 10 dresses! All together I will be sending 13 dresses to the Dress a girl around the world project. The ones in the picture are made by:

Top from left to right: Susan. She sent the first one and 3 of the second one. Ingeborg sent in the third and fourth dress.
Bottom from left to right: All from girls with no sewing experience. Can you believe that? The first one comes from Inge and the last three were sent in by my friend Sabine. She even made two with matching hair bands. Cute!

The other news is that through facebook I connected with Wendy. She is currently in Africa with her father and told me she visits Amsterdam on her way back. So we will meet up on April 18th in one of my favorite Amsterdam restaurants. I am really looking forward to that!

De afgelopen weken heb ik 10 jurkjes van jullie  mogen ontvangen! Alles samen gaan er dus 13 jurkjes naar het Dress a girl around the world project. De jurkjes op de foto zijn gemaakt door:

Van links naar rechts bovenste rij: Susan. Zij stuurde de eerste en van foto twee stuurde ze er maar liefst 3! Ingeborg stuurde de derde en vierde jurk. 
Van links naar rechts onderste rij: Allemaal van meiden zonder naai ervaring. Ongelofelijk toch? De eerste komt van Inge en mijn vriendin Sabine stuurde me de laatste drie. Twee zelfs met een bijpassend haarbandje. Superlief.

Het andere nieuws is dat ik Wendy van het project heb leren kennen via facebook. Ze is momenteel in Afrika en vertelde me dat ze Amsterdam bezoekt op weg naar huis. Dus we zullen elkaar daat 18 april ontmoeten in een van mijn favoriete restaurantjes in Amsterdam. Iets om naar uit te kijken!

I had never heard of the Turtle Tree Foundation before, but looks like they do a great job and sell fantastic handmade products by women in Haiti. It is a Dutch organization and they started in 2007. Want a hand-felted Iphone or Macbook sleeve? Why not buy it here?

Ik had nog niet van de Turtle Tree Foundation gehoord, maar het zier eruit alsof ze geweldig werk doen. Ze verkopen handgemaakte artikelen gemaakt door vrouwen in Haiti. Wil je een hand gevilte Iphone of Macbook sleev? Waarom koop je hem niet hier?
